Plot summary
In Brooklyn, young Christopher Wallace deals crack alongside D-Roc and Lil Cease. In 1990 his girlfriend Jan is pregnant and he needs more money, so he wins a street rap battle. Voletta, his mother, finds out he is dealing drugs and puts him out of the house. A weapons and cocaine charge sends him to prison, and afterward he meets Kim Jones, who refuses a relationship with him. After he and Voletta make peace, he records a demo, "Microphone Murderer," that reaches Puffy, a producer at Uptown Records. Puffy promises him a record deal, but Biggie learns Puffy no longer works there. He and D-Roc are caught with drugs again, and D-Roc takes the fall so Biggie can keep chasing music.

- Lil' Kim objected to the film's promiscuous portrayal of her, calling it full of lies, and was unhappy with Naturi Naughton playing her. Her scenes in the film contained a significant amount of nudity and sexuality.
- Open casting calls for the role of the Notorious B.I.G. began in October 2007, drawing actors, rappers and members of the public. Rapper Beanie Sigel auditioned but was not picked, and Nissim Black, then known as D. Black, was also considered.
