Plot summary
Tyler Gage, a directionless young man in Baltimore, spends his time with his best friend Mac Carter and Mac's younger brother Skinny, stealing cars, playing basketball, and going to hip-hop parties. After the three trash the theater at the Maryland School of the Arts, Tyler takes the blame alone and is sentenced to community service there. Working as a custodian, he watches Nora Clark's class prepare her senior showcase, an audition that will decide whether a dance company signs her. Her partner Andrew sprains an ankle, and the sophomores she auditions to replace him fall short. Tyler, who has no training, offers to take the part, and after showing he can handle it, he wins Director Gordon's reluctant approval to rehearse with her.
