Plot summary
David works in a film archive and lives with his son Billy and Billy's nanny, Sophie. He suspects that his wife Alice is unfaithful with Alex, a client of hers. Claire, who works alongside him, gives him an old reel that shows a brutal murder committed in his own house in 1902. David follows Alice after work one day and watches her with Alex. He picks up a hammer, then throws it into a nearby canal instead, and slips into a public toilet that his son Billy calls haunted, where a voice whispers to him. He becomes certain that a spectral presence shares the house with him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Canal (2014)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- To make The Canal's 1902 reel look identical to Louis Lumière's Feeding the Baby, Ivan Kavanagh tested different camera formats before filming the finished footage with a 1915 Universal movie camera and the lowest speed black-and-white 35mm stock he could find.
- Writer-director Ivan Kavanagh, who wrote the script start-to-finish from the first page, made sound a priority on The Canal, wanting it to be "as important as the picture", and used no pre-recorded archived sounds.
