Plot summary
Hope Ann Greggory won bronze with the United States women's gymnastics team in 2004 and has traded on it ever since. She is unemployed in Amherst, Ohio, and lives on what she takes from packages on her father Stan's mail route. Her former coach, Elena Pavleck, dies, and a letter to Hope promises $500,000 if she can guide Pavleck's best pupil, Maggie Townsend, to the Olympics in Toronto. Lance Tucker, a gold medalist who runs the national women's team, resents Hope's celebrity. Assistant coach Ben Lawfort, nicknamed Twitchy for his facial spasms, works at the gym. Maggie's success would replace Hope's standing in town.
