Plot summary
Tuition is due in two weeks and Joe Rantz has no job. Fellow student Roger Morris tells him the eight-man rowing crew comes with work and boarding, and though neither man has rowed, both make the junior varsity boat in a year when coach Al Ulbrickson is under pressure to beat the California program and compete for a place at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Joe and Roger mop floors to cover their fees. Joe begins dating Joyce, a classmate, and tells racing-shell builder George Pocock that his father left him at fourteen and he has been on his own since. On Pocock's suggestion, Al brings back Bobby Moch, an experienced but headstrong coxswain, to steer the junior varsity.
