Plot summary
Susan Carpenter works as a waitress and raises two boys in a small town in the Hudson Valley. Henry, the older at eleven, is a prodigy who manages the household's money through stock investments; Peter, the younger, is eight. Christina Sickleman lives next door and is Henry's classmate, and she has seemed unhappy lately. Henry believes that Christina is being harmed by her stepfather Glenn, who serves as the local police commissioner. He takes his worries to social services and to Janice Wilder, the school principal, but Glenn knows people throughout the local government, and the principal will not challenge him without conclusive evidence. Henry tells Susan that people who can help someone in trouble have a duty to act. He puts together a detailed plan in a notebook for his mother to follow.
