Plot summary
Jennifer Marsh is an FBI special agent who lives in Portland with her mother, Stella Marsh, and her daughter, Annie Haskins. Her night shift is spent in the bureau's cybercrime division alongside Griffin Dowd, handling identity theft and similar cases. A tip from an unknown caller sends them to KillWithMe.com, where a cat is tortured in a video feed. The site will not go down: whoever made it expected the attempt and included a fail-safe, so a mirror server takes over each time the original is closed. From the cat the webmaster moves on to people, holding them in traps that the number of hits on the site sets off, so a larger audience brings a quicker death. A public warning to stay off the page only drives more traffic to it.
