Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Michael Oher has spent years in foster care in Tennessee because of his mother's drug addiction, and each time he is placed with a new family he runs back to her. A friend's father asks Burt Cotton, who coaches football at Wingate Christian School, to enroll both boys. Cotton admits Michael, impressed by his size and athleticism, though his school record is poor. Michael befriends S.J. Tuohy, whose mother Leigh Anne works as an interior designer. On the eve of Thanksgiving, Leigh Anne sees Michael walking alone in the cold without adequate clothing. She learns he plans to sleep outside the closed school gym and offers him a place to sleep at the Tuohy house. She then asks him to stay for the holiday.

- The starring role was originally written for Julia Roberts, but she turned it down, and Bullock turned it down three times over discomfort with portraying a devout Christian. After a visit with the real Leigh Anne Tuohy she took the part, accepting a pay cut in exchange for a percentage of the profits.
- The film became the subject of controversy in 2023, when Oher alleged that the Tuohys had tricked him into signing a conservatorship agreement instead of legally adopting him, which prevented him from receiving royalties while the family indirectly made millions.
