Plot summary
Bunny runs from her boyfriend in play along the Malibu shore and is found dead beside a cave after something covered in seaweed attacks her. The sheriff finds mysterious footprints in the sand and takes a cast of them to the laboratory of the oceanographer Dr. Otto Lindsay, who says they could belong to a fantigua fish, a man-eating species grown large enough to live outside the ocean. Richard, Lindsay's son, once assisted his father with studies on mutation, but he will not go back to the laboratory; he wants to enjoy his time and his girlfriend Jane. Vicky, Richard's stepmother, is neglected by her older husband and turns to drink and flirting. Mark, a sculptor in the guest house, walks with a limp after a car accident Richard caused. Lindsay keeps pressing his son to rejoin the laboratory.
