Plot summary
The eight members of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrive in Israel from Egypt, booked to play at the opening of an Arab cultural center in Petah Tikva. Their Arabic has no p sound, and the town's name is understood as Beit Hatikva, so the bus carries them into the Negev desert instead. In that small town no transport leaves until the next day and there is no hotel. The musicians, led by Lieutenant-colonel Tawfiq Zacharya, meet residents who are curious, welcoming or wary by turns. They eat at a small restaurant, and its owner, Dina, arranges beds for them in her apartment, in a friend's apartment and in the restaurant itself.
