• While working on the film, director Yarden Agian lost two close friends, among them Yahav Viner, an assistant director and lighting technician on the film, who was killed on 7 October at his home in Kfar Aza; the finished film ends with a dedication to his memory.
• No distributor bought the finished film for wide release even though the New Fund for Cinema and Television had backed it; Agian said distributors refused it over its short length, fear of public antagonism, claims it was too raw or niche, or a feeling it wasn't Israeli enough. He also chose not to submit it to foreign festivals, saying it was made for Israelis.
• Production took seven years, beginning with an idea Agian had while studying at Minshar; he built the main character in a first-year screenwriting class taught by Lior Nesh'er. The film was shot unconventionally by a crew of close friends, with Tuval Shapir and Lea Lev, who began in student films, becoming part of the writing.
• The film's footage was cut during production into short films that screened on their own at festivals around the world, and the first of them, "Tomer Weinstein Must Die" (2021), runs about 17 minutes and holds most of the film's first act.
• Rehearsals were held over Zoom during the COVID pandemic and filming took place between lockdowns and closures; later the 7 October massacre and the Iron Swords war affected the production and shooting of the film.
• The film's official English title, I Hate My Friends, comes from the song by the fictional band Kill the Hipster heard in the film, and the soundtrack also includes a tune called Dickhead, a literal English translation of the film's Hebrew title.
