Plot summary
Charilaos Bardas, a retired officer, governs his Athens household by strict principles. His daughters are of an age to marry, and he says he wants that for them, yet he never lets a suitor get close. Their upbringing, their appearance and their behavior are all his concern. His wife Efterpi and his friend and neighbor Xenophon both urge him to soften his methods, and he refuses. Then news comes that his widowed sister Kalliopi, who has lived in Chicago for thirty years, is returning to Athens. She arrives with new ideas and sets out to modernize the general's house and to help her nieces toward marriage.
