Plot summary
Antonis Kokovikos works at a ministry, and for ten years Eleni has shared his house in a traditional Athens neighborhood without a wedding. She is the younger of the two and comes from a poor family; she cannot read or write, and the neighbors treat her as an outsider, with gossip and mistreatment. Antonis underrates her and expects her to serve him, and she does, while loving him. He decides to marry her so that she would be provided for. As his wife she no longer stays silent: encouraged by the wives of his friends, she claims equality and makes her own demands. Antonis, long used to being the master of the house, refuses to put up with it.
