Plot summary
An escape attempt by Galia and another woman ends in capture, and a mobster decides she is strong and smart enough for different work. He sends her to kill a man in a coffee shop. She is given an apartment and a pittance, and carries out further hits while trying to earn money and win back the passport that would let her return to Ukraine to her daughter. Across the hall, Elinor works as a grocery store cashier and is beaten by her husband; she dreams of a lottery win and of leaving him. Galia hears the beatings through the wall and offers her neighbor friendship, having once been a battered wife herself.
