Plot summary
Oliviero Rouvigny is an alcoholic writer who lives in an old villa in Teolo with his wife Irina and their maid Brenda. He mistreats both women, keeps his late mother Esther's black cat Satan with him, and hosts parties for local hippies. Irina is afraid of her husband. After Oliviero's mistress Fausta is found murdered, Inspector Farla questions him, and Irina reluctantly gives him an alibi. Oliviero's niece Floriana then pays an unexpected visit, and the Rouvignys meet her at the train station, watched by a gray-haired stranger. Oliviero is protective of the cat and of his mother's dress, and Floriana's arrival further complicates the couple's fragile marriage.
