Plot summary

In the summer of 1939, Marie leaves Paris with her parents, Jean and Eva, to spend the holidays with her widowed grandmother in a town near Avignon. Jean is a butcher, and the countryside is quiet; word of the coming war reaches the village only as rumor. Marie, on the edge of adolescence, is drawn to Alexandre, the local doctor, thirty years old. He takes pleasure in her lively, intelligent company until the night she comes to his house and offers herself to him. He refuses her, and she is despondent at being treated as a child. Her parents, meanwhile, are openly affectionate with each other, and Marie fancies herself a woman.
