Simone Signoret

Biography

Simone Signoret was a French actress whose earthy quality and sensual features led to typecasting, often as prostitutes. Born in Wiesbaden and raised in Paris, she took small parts during the German occupation and broke through with La Ronde (1950). Jacques Becker's Casque d'Or (1952), in which she played Amélie Élie, brought her a British Film Academy award and became a signature role in France. Many French films followed, among them Marcel Carné's Thérèse Raquin (1953), before Room at the Top (1958) won her the Cannes Best Actress prize and the Academy Award for Best Actress. She earned another Oscar nomination for Ship of Fools (1965) and worked with Sidney Lumet on The Deadly Affair (1967) before returning permanently to France in 1969. Later acclaim came for Madame Rosa (1977). On stage she translated and acted in The Little Foxes in Paris and played Lady Macbeth at the Royal Court Theatre in London.

Behind the camera
In 1962, Signoret translated Lillian Hellman's play The Little Foxes into French for a Paris production. It played at the Théâtre Sarah-Bernhardt for six months, and Signoret also took the Regina role.
