Plot summary
Linosa is a small fishing island off Sicily, and its families have an orderly life tied to the boats. When migrants start arriving from the sea, that order is disrupted. Fishermen who pull people from the water and then let them go ashore are punished, because Italian law treats this as facilitating illegal immigration. Filippo, a young islander, refuses to let them on his boat for that reason. His family chooses otherwise, taking an Ethiopian woman and her young child into their home after the two escape a sinking ship, even though taking them in is illegal.
