Plot summary
Jep Gambardella, sixty-five, works as a journalist and theater critic and has spent decades moving through the social events of Rome. In his youth he wrote a single novel, The Human Apparatus, which received appreciation and many awards, and he has not written another. He set out to become the king of society, and his circle includes Romano, a playwright, Lello, a toy seller, Viola, Stefania, a writer, and Dadina, the editor of the newspaper he writes for. A shock from the past interrupts this routine, and Jep begins to reassess his own life and the city beneath the parties and cafés.
