Plot summary
The Kastom people of Tanna have always arranged their daughters' marriages, and quarrels with the Imedin tribe continue. Dain is the chief's grandson; Wawa is a girl of the village, and the two are lovers whose affair stays secret. Wawa's younger sister Selin steals a penis sheath and runs into the wilderness, into the forbidden zone where the Imedin once killed their people. The girls' grandfather, the tribe's shaman, takes Selin to Yahul and the volcanoes to teach her respect, and the Imedin attack him there. Selin runs home and the villagers carry the wounded shaman back. To make peace, the two tribes meet in the village, and Wawa is given to the Imedin as a bride.
