Plot summary
Emma is a popular student whose plans for the future are already decided. Dean keeps to himself, gets in trouble and has withdrawn since his mother died. Their school travels to Trinidad so the students can help build a school for children in need. A quarterback flirts with Emma, though her attention goes to Dean. After Dean's knife is taken from him, his father makes calls so he can remain with the group. On the second night, both attend a boat party, police arrive in a raid, and Emma ends up in the water. Dean jumps in and gets her into a small dinghy, then cuts the rope tying it to the boat because he does not want trouble. The dinghy has no motor, and the two drift toward an island.

- During filming of the scenes in the lagoon, Thwaites and co-star Indiana Evans were so cold that they could not talk properly, so automated dialogue replacement had to be applied to those scenes.
- Male lead Brenton Thwaites had never heard of the Blue Lagoon films before, and upon being cast he watched the previous two for research, though he admitted he could not bring himself to watch Return to the Blue Lagoon in its entirety.
- Christopher Atkins, who was the male lead in the 1980 film The Blue Lagoon, also appears in this later version of the story.
- One review noted that the new film lacks the glowing cinematography of Néstor Almendros, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Blue Lagoon.
