Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Sean Baker shot the entire film on three iPhone 5s smartphones fitted with the FiLMIC Pro app and an anamorphic lens adapter, using the money saved on camera equipment to pay extras and secure filming locations.
- Baker got three prototype anamorphic lens adapters for free from Moondog Labs, a company still developing them on Kickstarter, simply by telling them he was working with producer Mark Duplass and that the gear would let his crew "shoot the way Sergio Leone would shoot westerns."
- Tangerine launched the first Academy Awards campaigns backed by a film's producer for openly transgender actresses, mounted in 2015 for stars Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, though neither ultimately received a nomination.
