Plot summary
In Melbourne, Tony Stilano and Trev Spackneys each run a take-away fish and chip shop, living above their premises. Their two shops sit side by side, and a rivalry between the owners has run so long that neither remembers what started it. Tony keeps strict order in his kitchen, insisting on careful food preparation and on the coldest drinks sitting at the front, while Trev uses dirty potatoes for his chips and shows little concern for health and safety. Each has an apprentice helping him: Sonja, Tony's cousin, works with Tony, and Dave works with Trev, and the two apprentices are a couple. When the multinational fast-food chain Burgies opens a store directly opposite the two shops, the rival owners unite.

- The rival fish-and-chip shop at the center of the film was not a real shop. The crew built the set opposite Alphington railway station on Wingrove Street in Alphington, Victoria, knocked it down once shooting finished, and the land was later subdivided for new houses.
