Plot summary
Late one night, a woman watching a young boy is killed, and the boy disappears. Months later, FBI special agent Frank LaCrosse comes to Amarillo, Texas, certain that a serial killer who has eluded a federal task force for nearly two years is hiding there and holds his son, Andy. Officials had removed LaCrosse from the investigation because the missing boy is his own. A note from the killer tells him that finding Andy means killing the man first. Sheriff Buck Olmstead, running for reelection against police chief Jack McGinnis, wants a solved murder case before voters go to the polls and is wary of the agent's methods. Meanwhile, a hitchhiker named Lane Dixon accepts a ride from a drifter, Bob Goodall, in a white Cadillac.
