Plot summary
During the school holidays, John, Susan, Titty and Roger Walker are staying with their mother at a farm beside a lake in the Lake District. Using a borrowed dinghy named Swallow, they cross the water and make camp on an island they call Wild Cat Island. There they meet Nancy and Peggy Blackett, two local girls who sail a dinghy called Amazon, live at Beckfoot up the river and call themselves the Amazon Pirates, flying the Jolly Roger from their boat. The Blacketts have camped on the island for years and treat it as their own, which puts the two crews at odds over whose territory it is.
