Kelly Slater
Biography
Kelly Slater is an American professional surfer who grew up in Cocoa Beach, Florida, near the water, and began surfing at age five, winning age-division events along the Atlantic coast as a boy and a first United States age-division title in 1984. He turned professional in 1990 and took his first world title in 1992, becoming the youngest world surfing champion at 20. Five consecutive titles followed from 1994 to 1998, and he returned to the tour in 2002 after a break, going on to a record 11 World Surf League championships and 56 Championship Tour victories. He won the Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year award four times. Beyond competition he played Jimmy Slade on seven episodes of Baywatch in the early 1990s, has starred in many surf films, and plays guitar and ukulele.

A first
Kelly Slater became the youngest world surfing champion ever at age 20 after winning the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii, which secured his first world title.
A first
At Teahupo'o in May 2005, Slater took the Billabong Tahiti Pro final heat. Under the ASP two-wave scoring system, he became the first surfer ever given two perfect scores, a total of 20 out of 20 points.
First role
Slater became a professional in 1990 and earned a place on the Bud Pro Tour. He won his first event on that tour, the Body Glove Surf Bout, held at Trestles in California.
Beyond film
In the mid 1990s, Kelly Slater was in a band called The Surfers with Rob Machado and Peter King. The trio put out an album in 1998 named Songs from the Pipe.
A first
Besides taking part in the ASP tour, Slater entered the X Games in 2003 and 2004, and he took gold medals in both of those years, winning them back to back.
