Plot summary
Frank Darbo works as a short-order cook and keeps two crayon drawings on his wall as reminders of the best days of his life: the day he married Sarah and the day he pointed a police officer toward a man who had snatched a purse. Sarah, a recovering addict, has left him for Jacques, a strip club owner who sells drugs and has her using them again. Frank falls into despair, then has a vision in which the Holy Avenger, the hero of a Christian television show, tells him that God has picked him for something special. Frank visits a comic book store, where the clerk, Libby, likes his idea for a new superhero. He makes himself a costume, calls himself the Crimson Bolt, and goes after thieves and dealers with a pipe wrench.

- James Gunn's first choice to play Frank Darbo was John C. Reilly, but the film could not get financed with him because he wasn't considered a big enough star at the time.
- After Super was accused of ripping off Kick-Ass, creator Mark Millar publicly defended Gunn, saying the two projects were developed independently at the same time, and went on to screen Super himself at his own Kapow! comic convention in London.
