Plot summary
Mi-ok arrives at the home of the biology professor Kang Yu-jin and his wife, Seon-hee, to work as their new housemaid. Her mother, a shaman priestess, has recently died in a house fire. The couple welcome the young woman into their home, and she brings with her a strange wooden doll. Seon-hee has been having nightmares about exactly that doll, and the sight of it in her own house gives her misgivings. She also begins to suspect that her husband is being unfaithful, a worry that follows the housekeeper's arrival. Kang Yu-jin, meanwhile, is occupied with a butterfly field study.
