Plot summary
Oliver Tate, an eccentric fifteen-year-old in Swansea, is infatuated with Jordana Bevan, a mischievous classmate. To impress her he picks on another girl at school; Jordana answers by inviting him to meet her in secret and photographing the two of them kissing, pictures she uses to make her ex-boyfriend Mark jealous. Mark beats Oliver up, and Jordana becomes his girlfriend. At home, Graham Purvis, a New Age motivational speaker and a former lover of Oliver's mother Jill, has moved into the house next door with Kim-Lin, his girlfriend. Uneasy about his parents' marriage, Oliver sets himself two goals: to lose his virginity, and to keep Graham away from Jill.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Submarine (2010)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Ayoade asked Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner to write the soundtrack. Turner said writing music for a film was something he felt not "qualified to do", and made an exception because of his friendship with Ayoade; he meant to perform cover songs but ended up writing six original ones.
- In early 2008 Joe Dunthorne, then studying at the University of East Anglia, was searching the internet for new music when he came across an advertisement asking for interns at Warp Films. After persuading his roommate, a film student, to apply, he began developing the script of Submarine and showed it to the boss of Warp Films.
- Submarine was mostly filmed using natural light, and mainly shot on 35mm film. A second, older 35mm camera was used for some scenic shots, although the crew initially disliked it because it "jumps a bit and is very noisy"; Ayoade insisted on using it.
- Michael Sheen and the X Factor contestant Lucie Jones were originally cast in the film, but both dropped out due to other commitments.
