Plot summary
Money is short for Marie Latour in occupied France, where she raises two children in a squalid flat. Her husband Paul is held in Germany as a prisoner, and a neighbor whose husband is also in Germany is pregnant and wants to lose the baby. Marie helps her, and other women come with the same request. She begins to charge for the help, and the money buys better food and clothes. Paul comes home from captivity, wounded and too weak to work. Marie has lost her love for him and refuses his demands. She tells him she wants to be a famous singer.
