Plot summary
Suzanne Blake cannot use her hands anymore, so her daughter Ella assists with her stop-motion films, and Suzanne overworks her. When a stroke leaves Suzanne comatose, Ella sets out to finish her mother's latest picture by herself. Her boyfriend Tom offers her a room, but she moves instead into the nearly empty building he manages, where she can keep animating. A young girl who lives there watches her work, calls the story boring, and tells a different one about a girl lost in the woods. Ella sets the old project aside and begins animating the girl's tale. The girl also has ideas about how the figures should look.
