Plot summary
Bill Baker, a laid-off roughneck in Oklahoma, scrapes by with construction jobs after a tornado in Shawnee. He travels to Marseille to see his daughter Allison, five years into a nine-year sentence for the killing of her roommate and lover, Lina, a crime she says she did not commit. Allison asks him to deliver a letter in French to her lawyer, Leparq, who tells Bill that no judge will act on hearsay. Bill meets a young girl named Maya at his hotel, and Maya's mother, Virginie, translates the letter, which shows how little faith Allison has in her father. A retired investigator, Dirosa, tells Bill that only DNA evidence can clear her.
