Plot summary
Harry Haller is a solitary intellectual living in Germany in the 1920s, after the Great War. He is depressed. Throughout his life he has feared his dual nature, being at once human and a beast. He is resentful of his middle class station. He has decided to die on his fiftieth birthday, which is soon. He then meets Hermine, who takes him dancing, brings him to jazz and to Maria.

- Steppenwolf took seven years of complicated pre-production because its producers, Melvin Abner Fishman and Richard Herland, a student of Jung and alchemy, wanted it to be "the first Jungian film". Ties built with the Hesse family let the film rights of the book be released.
- The finished film's rights were given entirely to its financier, Peter Sprague, and a "marketing disaster" followed: the color of the prints came out incorrectly, and for decades Steppenwolf was little seen outside brief runs in art film houses.
- Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon and Timothy Leary were all proposed for the main role of Harry Haller, but it went to Max von Sydow. Though Steppenwolf was made in English, none of the principal actors were native English speakers.
- No rights were ever given for any other Hermann Hesse novel to be translated to the screen, because of discontent with how the two films from his books, Steppenwolf and Siddhartha, came out.
