Plot summary
New York lawyer Clay Dalzell is asked by his old friend Tim Winthrop to find Alice, the girlfriend who disappeared in Chicago a year earlier and who Winthrop believes is now in the city. Dalzell attends a hit stage show called Midnight with Donna Mantin, who is romantically interested in him, and the show's masked star, Mary Smith, vanishes from the stage when Winthrop recognizes her. Gossip columnist Tommy Tennant claims to hold a vital clue, but he is shot in Dalzell's suite before he can share it. Dalzell becomes the prime suspect, and Inspector Doremus, doubting his guilt, gives him room to investigate.
