Plot summary
Summer camp is the reluctant destination for Muggs, Danny, Glimpy, Scruno, Skinny and Peewee, members of a New York City East Side boys club, and the trip pauses in Hillside, where the boys flirt with Margie, a soda fountain waitress. A radio broadcast there warns of a maniacal killer loose in the area. At camp, counselor Jeff Dixon tells his girlfriend, nurse Linda Mason, that the rowdy arrivals will keep him from his thesis. Nardo, a caped stranger, and Luigi, his assistant, ask a gas station attendant how to reach the hilltop Billings house, empty since its owner was murdered. The attendant then recognizes the next driver, Dr. Von Grosch, from his mystery magazines, takes Nardo for the killer, and alerts the constable. One night Muggs slips away to meet the waitress, and his friends follow.

- Producer Sam Katzman hired Carl Foreman and Charles R. Marion to write Spooks Run Wild, which paired Monogram's most popular draws Bela Lugosi and the East Side Kids for the first time; Foreman was paid $25 for his original story and $200 for the script.
- The film was the last screen appearance of East Side Kid Donald Haines, who enlisted as an aviation cadet in the United States Army Air Forces and was killed in action in 1943.
