Plot summary
The Cold Blue draws on 90 hours of raw footage shot in 1943 for The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress. That material had been deposited in the National Archives. Prints of the earlier film were faded, scratched and dusty, but the footage still held enough information for color grading, artificial intelligence techniques and frame-by-frame restoration. Because the original film had no soundtrack, its audio was rebuilt by tracking down the few B-17 bombers that can still fly and recording their exact sound with modern equipment. Narration comes from interviews with the remaining veterans of the 8th Air Force.
