Plot summary
During the last months of the United States' two-decade war in Afghanistan, the last American Special Forces units work alongside the Afghan officers they have trained. That relationship is central as Sami Sadat, a young Afghan general, leads his troops in defending their country. Around them, civilians join a chaotic exodus, desperate to flee as the Taliban advances to reclaim control.

Retrograde has been called a "hit list" the Taliban used to identify and punish collaborators with the United States; one of its Afghan protagonists was arrested and tortured by the Taliban, who found him through the film, and later died from his injuries.- National Geographic, which produced Retrograde under a joint agreement with Disney, announced it had withdrawn the film, citing "an abundance of caution" after new attention to it.
- Before Retrograde's broadcast premiere, the filmmakers chose to show close-ups of its subjects despite warnings from three active-duty U.S. military personnel and two former Green Berets who said the film would put Afghan protagonists in danger.
