Plot summary
The Tenkai, a restaurant with rooms to let, sits in a seaside town near the end of the 19th century, and Miss China is the one who keeps it running. Dr. Breckenridge, the inventor lodging upstairs, is chronically late with the rent. Miss China, for her part, is fond of Jim, a handsome watchmaker's apprentice, but believes he is courting the local flower girl. Their world is one where amazing things occasionally happen, and Dr. Breckenridge has completed an invention. Jim has a plan to put it to use, and the result is meant to be a ring more beautiful than any other.
