Plot summary

In early 21st-century Japan, the Ministry of Public Welfare has developed the Z-001, a hospital bed run by a computer and fitted with robotic features. It dispenses food and medicine, removes waste, bathes and exercises the patient, and runs on its own nuclear reactor. The first person volunteered to test it is Kijuro Takazawa, an 87-year-old widower and invalid. Haruko, the young nursing student who has been looking after him at home, objects to the treatment of elderly patients and distrusts a machine that cannot consider human feelings. The Z-001 transcribes Takazawa's thoughts through the computer in Haruko's office, and he uses the link to cry for help. Haruko turns for help to a group of computer hackers she finds in the hospital's geriatric ward, and they build a voice for the bed that imitates Haru, Takazawa's dead wife.
