Plot summary
Lum, a cheerful alien, lives on Earth with her human fiancé Ataru and her friends. Ataru, Lum and their classmates at Tomobiki High School are busy getting ready for the annual student cultural festival. A few of them begin to wonder whether the days are repeating themselves. To test the theory, the whole group goes home for the night rather than sleeping at the school. Every one of them ends up back at the school anyway, and the city limits hold them in.

- Mamoru Oshii wrote Beautiful Dreamer with no consultation from Urusei Yatsura creator Rumiko Takahashi, and Takahashi almost rejected the script because it deviated so far from her original story.
- Manga UK traces the roots of time loop anime and manga to Beautiful Dreamer; the device later appeared in Kimagure Orange Road (1987), the "Endless Eight" arc of Haruhi Suzumiya and All You Need is Kill (2004), filmed as Edge of Tomorrow.
