Plot summary

The tanuki of the Tama Hills, outside Tokyo, find their forests and meadows split and shrinking as the New Tama housing development spreads. With food scarce, the animals fight among themselves until the matriarch Oroku calls a truce and gathers them at an old temple. There the elders agree on a five-year plan: revive the forgotten art of transformation, study the humans around them, and send for the transformation masters said to live on Shikoku and Sado. The young tanuki begin their training, and Shokichi takes to it well, though some of his companions cannot manage a single change. Disguised as people, the trainees are sent into the nearby city to find work, while Gonta, whose birthplace has been destroyed, argues that the colony should answer the construction with force.
