Plot summary
In Tokyo, the Yamada family goes about its ordinary days. Takashi and Matsuko are the parents, sharing a house with their teenage son Noboru, their young daughter Nonoko, and Matsuko's mother Shige. Their days arrive as separate episodes: a child wandering off in a department store, arguments over who controls the television, the relationship between father and son, and Noboru's meeting with a first girlfriend. Shige offers advice and proverbs to everyone in the household, and Matsuko and Takashi's marriage is often at the center, with their rivalries and frustrations set against their wish to be good parents. The dog Pochi shares the home.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Isao Takahata wanted the art to look like watercolor pictures rather than cels, so the paper sketches were scanned and colored by computer using the graphics department set up for Princess Mononoke. Studio Ghibli advertised it as the studio's first fully digital film, but only the coloring stage was computerized.
- It was the only Studio Ghibli film not released by Toho or the Toei Company, and one of only two films by Isao Takahata to avoid both distributors, along with Gauche the Cellist.
- My Neighbors the Yamadas became the first Studio Ghibli film to be released on DVD in Japan, issued there on VHS and DVD by Buena Vista Home Entertainment Japan in November 2000.
