Plot summary
Johnny wants to race stock cars. He leaves his army father and lands in Las Vegas, where his money and belongings are soon gone; he turns to hustling to fund a trip east, to Charlotte, North Carolina, and a place in the racing industry. In the city he meets Eric, who takes a liking to him, and through Eric he comes to know Steve, another hustler, and Veronica, who once worked as a showgirl and a prostitute and has stood in as a mother to Eric since his own mother died. Eric's only keepsake of her is a silver dollar he carries for good luck. Steve offers tips as Johnny learns the trade.
