Plot summary
Cristina Moreno recounts a year of her childhood in an essay for a university application. Her mother, Flor, had moved them from Mexico and settled in a Latino community in Los Angeles, where Cristina picked up English and Flor did not. Supporting them with two jobs, Flor takes housekeeping work with John and Deborah Clasky so she can keep a closer eye on her daughter. John is a chef; Deborah, recently laid off, is at home; their children are Bernice and Georgie, and Deborah's mother, Evelyn Wright, lives with them. The newcomer and the family manage well together across the language barrier. Deborah takes a house for the summer and insists Flor stay there, so Flor brings Cristina, who is dazzled by the household's wealth.

- Cinematographer John Seale said more than two million feet of film was exposed on Spanglish, so much that Kodak sent him two bottles of champagne. It was the most footage he ever shot on a film until Mad Max: Fury Road in 2015.
- Paz Vega, who plays the Mexican housekeeper Flor, could not speak English when shooting started, so an interpreter stood on set throughout so that she could talk to the director.
