Plot summary
In Stayner, Ontario, Lizette waits tables at Joe's donut shop alongside Carol and Cheryl-Ann. Her thirty-fifth birthday is close, and she holds front-row tickets to a Dan Hill concert in Toronto: one for herself, one for her husband Terry, one for Terry's business partner Simon, and one for a date for Simon. Simon has just split from his fiancée Pam and will not attend without a companion, and Terry will not attend without Simon. Carol is ill, and when Simon's date cancels, Lizette asks Cheryl-Ann to take the seat.
