Helen Hughes

Biography

Helen Hughes was an American-Canadian actress who worked in theater, television and film. Born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, she acted in college productions while her studies, an undergraduate degree from Indiana State Teacher's College in 1940 and graduate work at Penn State, centered on art education. She settled permanently in Canada in 1972 after a ten-week summer theater season there led to further acting work. In 1980 she appeared in The 75th, staged at the Lunchbox Theatre in Alberta, and in 1986 she received a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination. She was nominated for best supporting actress at the 10th Genie Awards in 1989 for Martha, Ruth and Edie. She also appeared in television commercials for American Express, Anacin and Heinz ketchup, and made her final screen appearance at 96 as a guest actress in the series Sensitive Skin. She died in 2018.
