Plot summary
Bob Zellner is the son of a Methodist minister and a senior at Huntingdon College, an all-White school in Montgomery, Alabama. He and four classmates attend a service at a Black Baptist church marking five years since the Montgomery bus boycott, led by Ralph Abernathy and Rosa Parks. Police move to arrest them and the students slip out a back door; a newspaper calls them the Huntingdon Five, and the KKK burns a cross outside Zellner's room. His grandfather J.O., a klansman, tells him to stay out of the civil rights movement. After Zellner sees an attack on the Freedom Riders and helps Jessica Mitford reach safety, he joins the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as its first White field secretary, and the Black activists who suspect him watch him protest beside them.
