Plot summary
Annie works as a waitress at a Chinese restaurant in a small Appalachian town, where she is raising her daughter, Tara, alone and looking after her ill mother. She and her husband, Glenn, live apart. Glenn has stopped drinking and become a born-again Christian; he has a new job and wants to show he can be counted on around Tara. Annie's best friend, Barb, waits tables there too. The busboy is Arthur, a high school student Annie once babysat; his parents argue at home and often overlook him. At school, Arthur is drawn to Lila, a new student who takes photographs.
