Plot summary
Word of Nick Venizelos's luck at cards travels around his small-town barbershop, where he cuts hair and runs a game in the back room. A customer tells him he should try the big city, and the challenge he settles on is Hickory Short, a famous gambler there. Nick stakes half of the ten thousand dollars himself, and the shop's regulars raise the rest. He leaves his assistant Jack in charge and takes the train. In the city, Marie, who works at the hotel cigar stand, points him to the illegal poker game Hickory is holding. Nick sits down at the table to play.

- Smart Money is the only film in which Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney appeared together, even though the two were Warner Bros.' leading actors, mostly playing gangsters, throughout the 1930s.
- James Cagney ended up in a supporting role in Smart Money because it was shot after Edward G. Robinson's Little Caesar had come out and while Cagney was filming his breakthrough in The Public Enemy.
