Plot summary
Dr. Alice Arnolds works at the Whittingham Sleep Clinic, running overnight studies on patients with parasomnias, and she is clinical in her approach. Her younger brother died while sleepwalking when she was a child, found at the base of the stairs, a death ruled an accident that she has never accepted. The Morgan family brings in young Daniel, who wakes screaming and describes a dark shape with glowing eyes that settles on his chest at night. During the clinic's overnight observation, Alice monitors his vitals and brainwaves. Charlie, Daniel's father, falls into a deep sleep, convulses, then springs up with his eyes shut and attacks her. Staff restrain and sedate him, and his EEG reads flat. Her first explanation is night terrors or sleepwalking.
